About Fellowship of Friends

Founded by Robert Earl Burton in 1970, The Fellowship of Friends brings together the Fourth Way system of ideas within a tranquil Sierra foothills setting. Emphasizing practical techniques of awakening, the school draws on spiritual and scholastic traditions spanning a broad range of cultural beliefs, from the ancient Egyptians, Greek traditions, Mesoamericans to modern and contemporary philosophers and writers. Also incorporated are Buddhist Hindu, Taoist, Sufi, and Haiku spiritual concepts,as well as Western religious constructs from Christianity and Judaism.

Robert Earl Burton is the author of Self-Remembering (1991), which reflects Fourth Way teachings to raise consciousness through focused efforts on one's mechanical manifestations to get to and stay in the present. The teaching of the Fellowship of Friends has since evolved this concept to one of “being present” and directed efforts toward finding the universal keys running though diverse types of esoteric teachings.

The Fellowship of Friends emphasizes the importance of the appreciation of beautiful impressions from all cultures and collects and researches works of art to unlock the keys hidden in them. A current focus is on the Empire period style, which flowered as a second phase of romanticism and spanned 19th century paintings and furniture in Europe and beyond. Past areas of research have ranged from Ming period furniture to Renaissance paintings, German porcelain. The Fellowship's Petrarch Press focuses on hand type-set editions of classic works of literature.
